About the shot :

"Here We Go Again" Mapfre is a Volvo Ocean 65 competing in the 2017/2018 around the world yacht race and probably needs little introduction to the sailing community. This photo was taken as the fleet left their third stopover in Melbourne on their way up the east coast of Australia, across the equator for the 2nd time bound for Hong Kong. In a 25kt southerly all of the boats were heading south through Port Phillip Heads which can be very treacherous waters and while the water looks relatively flat here, as the boats exit the Heads the sea state will become extremely challenging. This photo reveals the immense power in these incredible racing yachts, capable of sustaining high speeds for days on end while at the same time being able to cope with the toughest sailing conditions the oceans can throw at it and their brave crews. The photo to me says "here we go". Rigged and prepared to battle the conditions ahead. Everything is set perfectly, tetales luffing slightly, windward runners taught, safety gear stowed and wardrobe stacked to weather in preparation. The crew is busy preparing, they're all looking forward with excitement and perhaps some trepidation to the weeks ahead competing in the worlds toughest yacht race.
