I’m Gabriel Heusi, a Brazilian sports photographer with about 16 years behind the lens and three Olympic Games covered so far. I was an athlete before I was a photographer, and that’s still how I see sport: from the inside, chasing the effort, the tension and the split-second decisions that define a race. Sailing brings all of that together like nothing else. I’ve photographed sailing at the Rio 2016 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Youth Sailing World Championships, The Ocean Race (formerly the Volvo Ocean Race) and SailGP. I live in Florianópolis, an island in southern Brazil where the ocean is part of everyday life, and I regularly shoot ocean and one-design regattas here. On the water, nothing ever repeats: the light, the wind and the sea change every second, and the crew has to read it all and react as one. Capturing that moment, when a boat, its sailors and the elements line up perfectly, is what keeps me coming back. Through my agency, Heusi Action, I’ve also covered endurance races, expeditions and rally raids around the world, and I bring that same storytelling instinct to every regatta.
