I made this photograph during Vele d’Epoca di Imperia, placing the camera exactly on the boundary between air and water. The surface of the sea crosses the image like a moving lens: above it, the sails catch the wind; beneath it, the submerged hull emerges as a dark, silent silhouette. The droplets, refractions and shifting curve of the waterline create what I call an “amphibious gaze”: rather than observing the race from a distance, the viewer experiences it from the exact point where yacht, sky and sea come together. I chose this image because it combines the elegance of classic sailing with the physical experience of being at sea, revealing a historic racing yacht from a viewpoint that normally remains unseen.
