Timu Memorial Regatta - THE

Lake Balaton, Hungary

This photo was taken during the Timu Memorial Regatta on Lake Balaton. The yacht is more than a century old and still races with her traditional gaff rig. Despite her age, she can still hold her own among much younger boats. I took the image with a drone, flying relatively close to the yacht to capture the details and character of a classic wooden racing boat from above. The perspective highlights her traditional rig and wooden hull against the distinctive greenish colour of Lake Balaton. A small detail gives the photograph a personal connection. At the end of the gaff, the flag of my sailing club is visible. It is the club where I first started sailing and later began photographing the sport. For me, the image brings together what makes these classic wooden yachts so special: their history and character, but also the fact that, more than a hundred years later, they are still out on the water doing what they were built to do.
