Christoph and Benjamin Morgen - JPK 10.50 “Momo”

Sandnessjøen

This photo shows MOMO approaching the finish of Stage 3 of Race to the Arctic in Sandnessjøen. We had been out on the water for six hours, waiting for the first boats to arrive. The image was taken at 00:50 on July 3, in the middle of the Norwegian summer night. The light really was almost exactly as it appears in the photograph – I have only made minor adjustments to brighten the boat slightly. This is one of my favourite images because it captures something we could never have planned. We knew where the boats would finish, but there was no way of knowing that MOMO would arrive at exactly the right moment to meet this incredible light. That combination of preparation, patience and pure chance is part of what I love about sailing photography. It became even more special when MOMO went on to win Race to the Arctic.
